The industry hidden in plain sight
If you ask someone who works in the insurance industry how they got into it, the overwhelming response is often that they simply “fell into insurance”.
Few people leave school or university with insurance at the top of their career wish list, yet speak to insurance professionals a few years into their careers and a very different picture emerges. Many are passionate about what they do and describe their work as enjoyable, rewarding and far more varied than they ever expected.
The perception of the industry is often that it is boring, one-dimensional and uninspiring. The reality, however, is quite the opposite.
Insurance offers a diverse range of career opportunities that extend far beyond what many people imagine. Alongside traditional roles in underwriting and claims, there are careers in marketing, sales, business development, data analytics, risk management, technology and client relationship management. Professionals can specialise in fascinating sectors such as cyber risks, fine art, marine, aviation, renewable energy and emerging technologies.
Guernsey itself has a thriving insurance sector and is internationally recognised for its expertise in insurance and risk management. The island has developed a strong reputation as a centre for innovative insurance solutions, particularly in the captive insurance market, attracting businesses and professionals from around the world. This creates opportunities for local people to build careers that have both a strong community connection, and an international reach.
One of the most appealing aspects of the industry is that no two days are the same. Insurance professionals are constantly adapting to new risks, evolving technologies and changing customer needs. Whether helping businesses recover after a major loss, advising clients on risk management strategies, or supporting innovation in new industries, the work is both challenging and meaningful.
Insurance is also an industry that genuinely makes things happen. It enables businesses to invest, organisations to operate, and communities to thrive. From marathons and music festivals to farms, construction projects and international trade, countless activities depend on insurance to provide the confidence needed to move forward.
In fact, it is difficult to identify an area of modern society that is not supported by insurance in some way. While many people associate insurance solely with cars and household contents, its influence extends much further. It protects livelihoods, facilitates economic growth and helps individuals and businesses recover when the unexpected occurs.
For Guernsey, the insurance industry also represents an important part of the island's professional services sector. It offers a wide range of opportunities for school leavers, graduates and experienced professionals alike, with clear pathways for development, professional qualifications and long-term career progression. Importantly, many of these opportunities allow individuals to build successful careers without leaving the island.
Perhaps most importantly, insurance is a people business. At its heart, the profession is about understanding clients, solving problems and providing reassurance during uncertain times. The technical aspects of the role are important, but success is often built on communication, trust and the ability to help others.
As the industry continues to evolve in response to digital transformation, climate challenges and emerging global risks, there has never been a more exciting time to be part of it. The sector needs talented individuals who can bring fresh ideas, new perspectives and innovative thinking.
So, while many people may still “fall into” insurance, those who do often discover a career they never expected to love. By challenging outdated perceptions and highlighting the breadth of opportunities available, both globally and here in Guernsey, we can encourage more people to consider insurance not as a backup option, but as a rewarding, dynamic and impactful profession in its own right.
